What Happens If You Stop Marketing?

This post is shorter than usual, and that’s by design. Why do you spend any time at all worrying about marketing? It takes a lot of time and energy to pull off when you could instead be focusing on your production, your family, or (heaven forbid!) yourself.
What would happen if you just didn’t worry about marketing? Think about the current regular audience you’ve built up. Assuming that more or less that same number keeps coming to your shows without any additional promotion, what would be that like?
Would you have to shut down because you couldn’t afford to even pay for the rights for your next show?
Would you need to move to a smaller venue?
Would your talent pool get discouraged and stop coming to auditions?
Or would things keep humming along at a pretty nice pace? At least for a while. Have you successfully built up enough of a modest community around your company that enough people show up for you to keep doing what you want to do? Maybe you don’t need to get any bigger to create the art you want and get it in front of people who care about it.
What would really happen if you didn’t worry about marketing anymore? I don’t know what the answer is for you, but it’s a question worth asking.
